SERIES OVERVIEW

OPERATION BUFFALO is a six-part drama series produced by Porchlight Films (ANIMAL KINGDOM, THE KING), and commissioned by the ABC. The series stars Ewen Leslie (THE CRY, THE GLOAMING), Jessica De Gouw (THE CROWN, THE SECRETS SHE KEEPS) and James Cromwell (SUCCESSION, BABE) and is written and directed by Peter Duncan (RAKE).

Set in 1956, at the height of the Cold War, when the Menzies government had welcomed British atomic bomb testing at ‘uninhabited’ Maralinga, OPERATION BUFFALO stars Leslie as Major Leo Carmichael, an Australian Army engineer and WWII hero charged with keeping the base functioning smoothly during the tests, code-named Operation Buffalo. This is no easy task given Cranky (Cromwell), his incompetent commanding officer, the government and the press are watching his every move. De Gouw is new meteorologist Dr Eva Lloyd-George, who starts asking unwanted questions.

And, as it turns out the land is not uninhabited. A family of Indigenous Australians arrive with their own questions about the giant clouds that explode occasionally.

Vincent Sheehan and Tanya Phegan produced the series with funding from Screen Australia, the ABC, Create NSW, South Australian Film Corporation and Head Gear Films.

If you enjoy AACTA’s preview of #OperationBuffalo, the season commences on Sunday 31 May at 8:30pm on ABC and iview.
