Throughout the year in Sydney, Melbourne and Los Angeles, AFI | AACTA hosts screenings of the latest Australian feature films prior to the film’s cinema release - exclusive to AFI and AACTA members. This provides an opportunity to view possible AACTA Award contenders before the general public, and in a private setting, accompanied by fellow screen enthusiasts and practitioners. For production insights, Q&As are often held with key cast and crew including directors, producers, actors, writers and cinematographers.

As many of Australia’s best known actors and filmmakers work at home and abroad, this strand follows their careers internationally – providing AFI and AACTA members to enjoy the talents of Australian practitioners and performers regardless of geography. International films screened as part of this strand showcase the work an Australian, either in a significant acting role or as director, producer or key creative.

This strand celebrates Australian cinema history by looking back at some of the most iconic and beloved Australian feature films ever made. At each event, AFI | AACTA brings together as many cast and crew as possible to celebrate and discuss the film; educating members about Australia’s rich cinema history, and breathing new life into each of these classics.

A series of Meet the Nominees events are held during ScreenWeek each year in partnership with the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and co-shoted with screen guilds and societies. Exclusive for AACTA members and those of participating guilds, these events offers members the opportunity to hear first-hand from those identified as the best in their craft across film, television and documentary via the AACTA Award nominations.

Comprising a member base of around 140 Australians with outstanding Australian and international screen credits, the AACTA International Chapter holds screenings each year in Australia and Los Angeles for purposes of voting in the AACTA International Awards. Members of AACTA’s International Chapter include Geoffrey Rush, Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Jan Chapman and Jacki Weaver, to name a few. This strand cements AFI | AACTA with a voice in the global screen industry, honoring our international peers and Australians working in screen abroad – a model reflecting that of the Oscars and the BAFTAs, with an Australian perspective.

This strand explores the very best of Australian television by presenting ‘big screen’ premieres of upcoming productions exclusively to AFI and AACTA members before their on-air release. Similar to AFI | AACTA film screenings, directors, producers and principal actors from the production often participate in a panel discussion held following the screening. Not only do these events enable the production to be seen by a large number of voting members, they serve as premieres for the productions, complete with media, network executives and many of the cast and crew attending.

Documentaries shape our understanding of ourselves, our culture and society, and create an enduring legacy for all Australians – past, present and future. This strand presents some of the year’s best Australian feature documentaries, often supported by a Q&A with the filmmakers, which provides AFI and AACTA members a chance to ask questions first-hand.

The AFI | AACTA Masterclass series brings together some of the worlds greatest film and television professionals to share their experience and expertise with AFI and AACTA members. These sessions provide members with the unique opportunity to hear from, question, and be inspired by distinguished Australian filmmakers, many of whom have been awarded at home and abroad.

In addition to showcasing Australia’s best shot films competing for the AACTA Awards each year (via screenings and online via AACTA TV), AFI | AACTA also showcases emerging talent via its annual short film competition, #SocialShorts. Launched in 2014, #SocialShorts highlights emerging filmmakers as their short films go head-to-head to win in one of three categories – Comedy, Drama and Open. #SocialShorts helps increase awareness of the participating short films (and the filmmakers) via online promotion and voting.

Thanks to AFI | AACTA’s collaboration with AMPAS, an exclusive annual gala event is held for AFI and AACTA members in Sydney and Melbourne to showcase the Oscar nominees for Best Live Action Short Film and Best Animated Short Film. During Awards season, AFI | AACTA also host an annual Oscars Viewing Party, with live screenings of the Oscars held in Sydney and exclusive to AFI and AACTA members.
