Discovering Australia's Next Top Filmmakers
The search for Australia’s next generation of filmmaking talent has begun as AACTA's #SocialShorts presented by MINI, a national online short film competition showcasing Australia’s top short filmmakers, launched today.
Returning for 2019, #SocialShorts presented by MINI provides Australian short filmmakers with a platform to have their work seen, shared and supported by a wide and immediate online audience of film enthusiasts and the Australian film industry.
The competition ran for two weeks across Drama, Comedy and Open categories, with the winners of each category announced on Monday 29 July.
Now in its fifth year, #SocialShorts continues to grow alongside its emerging creatives, featuring an increasingly diverse slate of short films and unique voices who are taking their screen careers to the next level.
2019 winners include:
Small time criminals and big time best friends Maya and Cassie are going to rob Wayne Mason's house. It should be one of the easiest scores the duo have ever made, if only they can keep their existential crises in check.
REGIME follows the daily regime of Leila, a 30-year-old Syrian Woman, during Syria's brutal civil war.
A couple's life is sent into turmoil when their daughter goes missing.
#SocialShorts entrants comprise some of the short films which are entered by not nominated for an AACTA Award, as well as some of the short films which entered but were not nominated for the previous year’s Awards.
Audiences vote for their favourite short films in each category on the #SocialShorts website and then share via Facebook, with the winning film for each category to be announced at the start of the following week.
AFI | AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said the exceptional growth in voting and entries over the past three years launched attests to the important role #SocialShorts plays in promoting and nurturing emerging talent.
“Short film excellence has been recognised and awarded by AFI | AACTA for over thirty years, launching the careers of some of Australia’s top filmmakers. #SocialShorts helps extend the reach of the work of the talented short filmmakers who enter the AACTA Awards by creating an audience choice short film completion, which complements the spotlight shone on our Awards nominees and winners.”
